(The What-What)

I'm somewhere in-between an 8 year old and 50 year old. somewhere in-between way too much technology and not enough. somewhere in-between all of that is the "The What-what".

Jeary Sylves Marauds Ears with Unique, Soulful Sound

Jeary Sylves Marauds Ears with Unique, Soulful Sound
By Deanna Mitchell

While many have tried to follow in the steps of hip hop pioneers such as Lauryn Hill, Jeary Sylves not only marches down the path of original MC-ing, but is leaving his own set of footprints in the road.

Jeary Sylvester Payne, an underground lyricist residing in Sierra Vista, Arizona, is bringing the spirit of soulful hip hop back from the early 90s, and putting his own contemporary twist on the sound. Combining the vibe and smooth melodies of such artist as Black Star or The Roots with a flow that reminds listeners of Common or Lupe Fiasco puts Payne in a category of versatility that hasn’t been seen since the age of Lauryn Hill. Because of this, he is not only identified as an MC, but also as a poet and singer with a voice just as soulful and moving as the infamous lyricist herself.

“Lauren hill album changed his life. I tell people all the time and I mean it…she represents all the things I want to represent as an artist, as a musician,” said Payne.

Along with this musical influence, Payne draws his unique style from his up-bringing. Growing up in a city Payne describes as “devoid of any musical culture”, he found it easier to shape and mold a sound that fit his style without too much outside influence. His older sister, an artistic individual herself, also opened his eyes to the many aspects of music, feeding him bits and pieces of individuality.

“I contribute the majority of my love, respect & passion for Hip-Hop, Soul and music in general to my older sister,“ Payne said in his biography on his website. “I would sneak into her room when she was gone and stare at the posters on the wall, and read her magazines like Word Up! It was from these rare moments that I found myself…”

Payne describes his music to be relatable, something that any person can connect with when listening. Unlike many artist today whose music is directed towards a younger audience, Payne reaches out to both younger and older generations with subject matters that range from the death of a loved one, or lost love, to his many experiences as a college student.

While in pursuit of a higher education, Payne struggled with finding a perfect balance between his school work, his job at the airport and getting his first mixtape, Midnight Mauraders: Late Night Thoughts together. This in itself was a major challenge for Payne who didn’t want to simply throw something together. The majority of the time he had to dedicate to his sound was late in the night after completing his homework.

“The first few tracks that came out were in my room between midnight and three, describing what goes on in the middle of the night,” said Payne. “It was difficult. I’m the kind of person where if I’m doing one thing, I want to give my attention 100% to that right there…a lot of the times, one or the other would get neglected.”

The Midnight Marauder: Late Night Thoughts Mixtape #ONTHEWAY

Midnight Marauder has turned into a collection of thoughts, feelings, emotions, & moments..

These moments were crafted in the late/early mornings on my finial 2 semesters of college when i couldn't focus on homework or just needed a escape I just started recording.. Needless to say this Mixtape has been long over due & the lessons I've learned while trying to complete it is that life is what happens when you think you have plans of your own. From working two jobs & full time schooling its been ILL.. but it has added as much as it has taken away. This being my first constructed piece of documented work for public consumption has left me being over critical of my work & growth as an artist and or musician. Through this process I hoped to discover myself and who it is I want to be as an artist & the kinds of music I want to make and share with the masses.. Lastly, all due respect to A Tribe Called Quest, who are without doubt the true "Midnight Marauders" & I thank them for direction.

Midnight Marauder: Late Night Thoughts... Coming soon...

The Never Left but Back None the Less!

It's become routine how much time I take in-between post, I assure you it's not on purpose & as i have always stated that my mind is always in constant ration acclimating thoughts, opinions, & ideas but the distant between my mind and my virtual nope pad by no stretch of the imagination is a short one Lol (not for me that is). With that being said i compiled a list of things I'd like to address & discuss (We'll get to that), a push if you will to make this relationship between my thoughts and this stinking blog page Lol more natural & consistent. Also, I'd like to say this- my events may not be current or even considered relevant by that matter but trust that with whatever i say & or post that it means something & holds some significances to me..

I figured I had to return with something.. SO I thought i would lend my voice to the cause.
both the Vids or snipps (It's how i work lol). The first one is a song in motion (still working on it) that me & Sam I Am wrote it's called "Can We Go Back". The last snipp is what i like to call an haiku type Ode to Valentines day. PEACE!(But I'm not done yet!)

Show'n Ya boy a good time.

SO-- its been a few months between post, but I promise I'm working a little more consistent. (Now) Last Friday the 8th I got up with an homie i went to JuCo (junior college) with, who was playing football for Alabama but recently transferred to IU (Go Hoosiers). My mentor was suppose to be attending but a certain someone canceled on babysitting (She's Huff for that one) Anytheways i still decide to still get with my good friend, I mean i would have just stayed home playing Call of duty all night any ways..(So!?). Let me state that my "Nigga" Ron Young showed your boy a ILL time. First off we hit Axis.. Why ? cus were on VIP, why? because his lady friends-friend was celebrating her born day and put us on the list which meant NO COVER (which is never bad) we posted up stairs by the bar for about hour, then we shook over to Myst ( lately the place to be on a Friday night). The line was deep, fortunately for us we cut the line and went straight to the front Why? because we had females with us, its a proven strategy ( I'm with them!!). I must say i have to tip my hat to the homie Ron, cause he was like "yo i'ma see if we can slip into VIP" & we did! the bouncer must have been tired cus he now for damn sure Myst don't give nigga hand stamps! Lol. ( I don't what it is about being in VIP that makes females instantly want to push up and dance on you? I ain't complaining tho) Funny thing is I stayed in VIP the whole damn night just in case the bouncer smarten up and wouldn't let me back in LOL ( I had to pee too). I ran into another MCC veteran Darrel upstairs in VIP and slides me a drink like "my nigga we got bottles"

I choose to keep it simple most weekends, but aye now and again i step out looking freshly fitted and try to have a good time. This time i actually did, YO Ron you held me down man I appreciate that, I got you on the next play
Peace!?

Bridging the "virtual" gap

I had been speaking with my sister La, and I was explaining to her my blog dilemma. I have to be able to write on the go- - for fear that it won't get done at all. After hours of searching I found the savior of my thoughts that will continue my free expression. Sidebar- I love this damn phone even more now my iPhone 3GS(never stops amazing me). I'm avid supporter of technological advances although I must say I tend to complain that we have to much technology sometime of fear that we may in time push the margin to far the the left. Although, in rare moments it serves a just purpose.

Maybe it's about that time...?(RE-Introduction)

Maybe it's about that time... right? Yo, I "constructed" my blog page well over a year ago maybe longer I remember the exact day too! It was like 7:30 on a Thursday night. I was on main(ASU campus) at a student/faculty jazz concert which happened to be a tribute to the incredible legacy John Coltrane(A Love Supreme-Classic). However, I never actually made any post though I've had more than enough compelling instances from my "own" life more times than not my "own" doing to share with the masses... but to no avail. Thing is as people we have this uncanny ability to get in our own head or in our own way. annnd me being no different, I told myself "Son, seriously? you hate written" yet I'm a writer(simple complexities). It didn't add up and made no sense I could jus flat-out say i was being lethargic about it. Although, i like to think it was a little more involved than that.. I honestly had soo much going on that I in no way could translate. Truthfully, I still feel this way but when passion is ignored it dissipates. SO, consider this my RE-Introduction- Who Am I? I'm Jeary Slyves (once Jai-Real, but kinda always be Jai-Real-thats another story) I'm a "rebel activist of sound" & this is a joint off my Midnite Marauder Experiment mixtape Called "late Night Thoughts... Directed by JaiHall(although, she's not happy with how it came out LOl, i still had to drop it!) and it was edited by Sam "Sneaky Pete" Nicholes
SO- Welcome-- welcome back for the first time!?
